SUMMARY:Summer School | Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in International Law: Human Rights and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:This summer school focuses on the emergence of sexual orientation\, gender identity (SOGI) and intersex issues in different areas of international law\, such as human rights law\, refugee law\, international economic law\, and international criminal law. Details on the application for this edition are available on the ‘Application’ page (see lefthand column). The programme will be similar to the programme of the 2025 edition (see link in the righthand column). \n\nCourse information\nThe information on this website will be updated from time to time\, also to reflect changes in the draft programme (see the weblink on the right). Meanwhile\, people interested in this field can take a look at the many online video\, audio and reading materials listed in the Leiden Overview on SOGIESC in International Law (see the weblink on the left). \nThe five-day summer school on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in International Law is held each summer at Leiden University; in 2026 from 29 to 31 July in the Hague and continuing on 3 and 4 August in Leiden. The dates for 2026 have been chosen to allow participants to also take part in the WorldPride Human Rights Conference (5 to 7 August in Amsterdam) and other events of WorldPride\, EuroPride and Pride Amsterdam (all from 25 July to 8 August). \nThe course focuses on the emergence of SOGI and intersex issues in different areas of international law. Participants learn about the history of the rights of LGBTQI+ persons in the international sphere\, about current developments around the world and about the potential for future progress on equality. While some lectures will focus specifically on sexual orientation\, on gender identity/expression\, or on sex characteristics (together sometimes called SOGIESC)\, other sessions will focus on specific regions (including Africa\, and Latin America) or on specific topics. \nSpecial attention will be given to important precedent-setting cases that have helped to achieve some international protection against homophobia and transphobia. Themes include: global and regional human rights mechanisms\, recognition of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities in refugee law\, protection for women and LGBTQI+ persons in international criminal law\, and the role of international and non-governmental organisations.

SUMMARY:Conference | EAUH Conference 2026 - City Networks in Europe and Beyond: session 65: Sexual Metropolitans? Intercity Networks and Shared Cultures of Sexuality in Modern Cities
DESCRIPTION:After several decades of research\, the history of sexuality has proved to be a good lens through which to observe the social and cultural implications of the processes of urbanisation that swept through Europe and the rest of the world between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Researchers have highlighted the role of large cities in the development of new forms of modern urban life and\, particularly\, in the emergence of new practices\, notions\, identities and common meanings related to intimacy\, sexuality and affective relationships. \nHistoriography has shown how this urbanising process has generated important similarities between large cities located thousands of kilometres apart\, although each had its own rhythms and particularities. As far as the field of the history of sexuality is concerned\, although recent works are beginning to propose comparative/global/transnational analyses that seek to understand these similarities or common dynamics\, research centred on a single city still prevails. \nThis session thus aims to bring together historians and other social scientists around a latent question in studies on urban history and the history of sexuality: the idea of a shared sexual culture between cities and urban centres\, whose relations and links transcend the state or national framework. Beyond local specificities\, is there a common substratum of shared practices\, rituals\, symbols\, convictions or common meanings around sex and affective relations in modern metropolises? And if so\, what role do circulations and networks connecting these cities play in the process? \nProposals that analyze the circulation of ideas\, people and objects\, as well as the degree to which these circulations constitute networks linking cities are particularly encouraged. The nineteenth and twentieth centuries will be specifically targeted\, though proposals that challenge this chronological framework may be considered. Proposals that study connections between cities within or beyond Europe will be equally valuable to the discussion. \nThe session offers to address 5 axes: \n1.The inter-city circulation of cultural references (dresscodes\, visual cues\, mannerisms) and productions (shows\, performances\, artforms) showcasing modern gender expressions and sexualities.\n2. The connection between the development of urban leisure and sex tourism as a form of circulation connecting cities across borders.\n3. The inter-city networks and circulation of sexual activists\, and how the urban framework shapes their ideas\, trajectories and militancy.\n4. Inter-urban circulations linked to the sex market\, whether from the point of view of sex providers (including forced or constrained displacements) or intermediaries (legal or illegal).\n5. The circulation of sex-related products and artefacts (contraceptives\, sex toys\, etc.)\, and how merchants\, companies and shopkeepers contribute to a connected urban material sexual culture.
