On Monday 19 November everyone can attend the lecture of Paul Mepschen with the title ‘The history and politics of HIV/AIDS’. This lecture is part of a course for SIT students, but especially for this occasion this meeting is accessible to everyone!
About the lecture
Part of the International Perspectives on Sexuality and Gender program of SIT Abroad, we provide a screening of We Were Here, followed by a short discussion about the film. We Were Here documents the coming of what was called the “Gay Plague” in the early 1980s. It illuminates the profound personal and community issues raised by the AIDS epidemic as well as the broad political and social upheavals it unleashed. We Were Here evokes an epic history, through the intimate recollections of five longtime San Franciscans whose lives were transformed by the epidemic. The screening will be followed by a short discussion on the politics of HIV and AIDS with students and other participants.
About Paul Mepschen
Dr. Paul Mepschen is Postdoc at the Program Group Political Sociology at the University of Amsterdam. He has worked on sexual nationalism and the relations of sexuality, religion, and secularism in Western Europe. He has taught courses on religion, gender and sexuality, politics, and methodology, as well as on sociological and anthropological theory. He received his PhD degree from the University of Amsterdam for his dissertation Everyday autochthony. Difference, discontent, and the politics of home in Amsterdam (2016), on the politics of autochthony in the Netherlands (cum laude).
